A catastrophic construction accident in northeastern Thailand left at least 32 people dead and dozens injured after a massive crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train, causing several carriages to derail and overturn. Authorities said the crane involved was a launching gantry crane, a large self-supporting structure commonly used in the construction of elevated railways and highways. It was being used to build an elevated section of a major rail project when it suddenly collapsed onto the active line below.

The elevated segment where the accident occurred is part of a Thai Chinese high-speed railway project designed to link Thailand with Laos and ultimately China as part of the broader Belt and Road Initiative.

Italian-Thai Development issued a public statement expressing condolences and committing to compensate the families of those killed as well as cover medical expenses for the injured.
