Some of music’s biggest stars took centre stage in two major entertainment events, with Taylor Swift making MTV Video Music Awards history, Madonna collecting several major honours and Celine Dion surprising crowds with a performance at Paris Fashion Week. The events brought together established music legends and a new generation of performers during a memorable few days for pop culture.

Swift Makes MTV History

Taylor Swift became the most successful artist in MTV Video Music Awards history after winning video of the year at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

Swift entered the night tied with Beyoncé with 30 VMA wins before moving ahead with her latest victories. She received video of the year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” a track from her 2025 album, The Life of a Showgirl.

The 36-year-old singer also received the inaugural artist director award. While accepting the honour, Swift paid tribute to Dolly Parton, calling her the “ultimate showgirl.”

“I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time,” Swift said.

Swift also used the ceremony to debut the music video for “Patient Zero,” starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The song is among four new tracks included on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.

Madonna Celebrates Another Major VMA Night

Madonna also had a successful night, winning artist of the year, best dance and best collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love,” the lead single from Madonna’s 2026 album Confessions II.

After winning artist of the year, the 68-year-old reflected on her long history with the awards.

“Most of you were probably not born when I performed at the very first VMAs 43 years ago,” Madonna said.

She also spoke about the period leading up to her latest music, saying, “I spent the last year and a half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music that I wanted to make.”

Madonna returned to the VMA stage for a performance that included Carpenter and Charli XCX. Her appearance marked another chapter in a relationship with the awards that stretches back to the inaugural VMAs.

An Unexpected Collaboration Comes Together

Madonna also revealed the unusual story behind her collaboration with Carpenter, explaining that she eventually contacted the younger singer directly after waiting several days for a response.

“When five days passed and I still didn’t get connected with Sabrina and didn’t hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me – five days – I DM’d [direct messaged] her,” Madonna said.

“She answered me back and… within weeks we were in the studio together,” she continued. “It was fabulous.”

Carpenter responded with a clarification about the delay.

“My team replies. Just so everybody knows, they do respond to people,” Carpenter said. “But I respond faster. So direct line to me is always the best way to get in contact.”

The ceremony also produced other milestones. Blackpink star Lisa became the first Asian solo artist to win the VMA for best pop with “Dream.” Accepting the award, she told her fans she “wouldn’t be here without you guys.”

Celine Dion Surprises Paris

Across the Atlantic, Celine Dion delivered another major music moment as Paris Fashion Week began.

The Canadian singer surprised spectators by appearing on the catwalk beneath the Eiffel Tower during L’Oréal’s annual show. Wearing a sleek black gown, Dion performed her 2002 hit “I’m Alive” before being joined by L’Oréal ambassadors including Viola Davis, Simone Ashley, Aja Naomi King and Eva Longoria.

The unexpected performance added a musical spectacle to the opening of one of the fashion industry’s biggest weeks.

Dion’s Return to the Stage Continues

The Paris Fashion Week appearance comes during a significant return to live performance for Dion.

The Quebec-born singer recently began a 26-show run in Paris, with 16 performances scheduled for September and October and another 10 planned for May 2027.

Her Fashion Week appearance gave audiences another opportunity to see her perform outside the concert setting, this time surrounded by some of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment.

Paris Fashion Week’s women’s spring-summer programme continues until October 6, with major fashion houses including Dior, Tom Ford, Schiaparelli and Givenchy among those presenting collections.

Music Legends Remain in the Spotlight

From Swift breaking the all-time VMA record to Madonna adding new awards more than four decades after her first appearance at the ceremony, the VMAs highlighted the lasting influence of some of pop music’s biggest performers.

Dion’s surprise appearance in Paris continued that theme, bringing another established music icon onto a major international stage. Together, the moments showed how artists from different generations continue to shape music, fashion and popular culture.
