The opening week of the 2026 NFL season delivered huge scores, dramatic finishes and several performances that immediately raised expectations. Now Week 2 offers the first real opportunity to determine which of those results were signs of what is to come and which were simply opening-week surprises. From the Buffalo Bills unveiling their new stadium to the Chicago Bears trying to build on an explosive offensive performance, the second week of the season is packed with storylines worth watching.

Buffalo Opens a New Era at Highmark Stadium

One of Week 2’s biggest events comes Thursday night, when the Buffalo Bills host the Detroit Lions in the first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium.

After spending 53 seasons at their previous home in Orchard Park, the Bills are moving next door into a new open-air stadium that cost more than $2.1 billion and has a capacity of 60,108. Despite the massive investment, the team retained one familiar feature: there is no roof, meaning Buffalo’s famous cold-weather conditions can remain part of its home-field environment later in the season.

The stadium has already generated some criticism, particularly from fans concerned about obstructed views and its smaller capacity compared with the previous venue. Demand for the first regular-season game, however, remained high, with entry-level tickets priced above $400 as of the Wednesday before the matchup.

Buffalo enters the game after defeating the Houston Texans in Week 1, while Detroit survived an overtime thriller against the New Orleans Saints. Both teams are 1-0 heading into the Thursday night showdown.

Chicago’s Offense Starts With a Historic Explosion

Before the season began, Bears head coach Ben Johnson set an ambitious target for Chicago: he wanted his offense to score more points than any team in NFL history.

After one game, the Bears were certainly moving in the right direction.

Chicago scored eight touchdowns in a remarkable 59-37 victory over the Carolina Panthers. The Bears tied a franchise record with six rushing touchdowns and scored more points than they had ever produced in a season opener.

Caleb Williams played a major role in the offensive explosion. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns while adding 65 rushing yards and another two scores. His performance also renewed discussion about whether he could become the first Bears quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in a season.

Chicago now hosts the Minnesota Vikings in its home opener, giving the Bears another opportunity to show whether their Week 1 offensive fireworks can continue.

Joe Burrow Presents Houston With Another Major Challenge

The Houston Texans entered the season with significant expectations surrounding their defense, but the unit struggled immediately against Buffalo.

Josh Allen and the Bills scored 36 points against Houston, and the Texans also missed important opportunities late in the game. Houston dropped a potential interception before allowing a 34-yard touchdown as Buffalo completed its comeback.

Things do not become much easier in Week 2.

The Texans now face Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals. Burrow’s opening performance against Tampa Bay was relatively modest by his standards, as he threw for 254 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Still, Houston will need a much stronger defensive showing to avoid beginning its season with consecutive losses.

The Texans know an early deficit can be overcome. They started last season 0-3 before recovering to reach the playoffs, but avoiding another difficult start would make their path considerably easier.

The NFC South Searches for Its First Breakthrough

No division endured a tougher opening week than the NFC South.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers all lost their season openers, making the NFC South the only division that failed to record a Week 1 victory.

New Orleans came especially close. Head coach Kellen Moore chose to attempt a two-point conversion for the win against Detroit rather than extend the game, but the Saints ultimately fell short.

The division is guaranteed an opportunity to improve when Atlanta hosts Carolina in Week 2. Tampa Bay also returns home to face Cleveland, while New Orleans travels to Baltimore for another difficult road matchup against the Ravens.

For all four teams, Week 2 offers an early chance to change the conversation surrounding the division.

New York Football Suddenly Has Reasons for Optimism

For the first time since 2009, both the New York Giants and New York Jets opened an NFL season with victories.

Interestingly, 2009 was also the last season in which both franchises began 2-0. That gives both New York teams an unusual opportunity to recreate a start their fans have not experienced in 17 years.

The Giants face a difficult test Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams. New York’s Week 1 game plan allowed quarterback Jaxson Dart and running back Cam Skattebo to cause major problems for Dallas, but Los Angeles will have extra rest after its season-opening trip to Australia.

The Jets, meanwhile, host the Green Bay Packers. New York defeated Tennessee in its opener, but Green Bay arrives looking to respond after a stunning collapse against Minnesota. The Packers led 22-10 with less than 20 minutes remaining before Minnesota finished the game on a 29-0 run to win 39-22.

Week 2 Could Separate Early Trends From One-Week Surprises

The second week of an NFL season always carries a unique sense of uncertainty. One strong performance can suddenly make a team look like a contender, while one poor outing can create concerns that may disappear a week later.

That makes Week 2 especially revealing. Buffalo gets to begin a new chapter inside its new stadium, Chicago has an opportunity to prove its explosive offense can be sustained, Houston’s defense faces another elite quarterback, and both New York teams have a chance to begin 2-0 for the first time since 2009. By the end of the week, some of the biggest Week 1 storylines may look considerably more convincing, while others may already appear to have been temporary flashes.
