Sleeper trains are bringing new attention to a slower and more memorable way of seeing the world. Instead of spending hours at an airport or rushing between destinations, passengers can climb aboard at night, settle into a cabin and wake up somewhere completely different. From luxury rail journeys near famous landmarks to massive routes crossing North America, overnight trains continue to show that the journey itself can be part of the adventure.

A Night on the Rails Can Become Part of the Trip

Sleeper trains have long held a special place in travel. They combine transportation with accommodation, allowing travelers to cover large distances while they sleep rather than losing an entire day moving between cities.

CNN described them as trains that let passengers “bed down in one world and wake up in another.” The idea captures much of their appeal. Travelers can watch one landscape disappear outside the window before going to sleep, then open the curtains the next morning to find an entirely new destination waiting for them.

Overnight rail journeys can now be found on six of the world’s seven continents. The experiences vary widely. Some trains operate almost like luxury hotels on wheels, while others cover huge distances and focus on the scenery along the way.

From Machu Picchu to the Taj Mahal

Some of the world’s most memorable rail experiences connect travelers with famous destinations such as Machu Picchu in Peru and the Taj Mahal in India.

North America offers a different type of adventure. Long distance trains across Canada and the United States can carry passengers through changing landscapes over journeys lasting many hours or even days. Some feature panoramic viewing cars designed to give passengers wide views of mountains, forests and open countryside.

That variety is part of what makes sleeper trains unusual. They can serve as practical transportation while also becoming an experience travelers might choose specifically for the journey.

Anthony Bourdain Showed the Romance of Rail Travel

Interest in classic train journeys has also been connected to renewed attention around chef and traveler Anthony Bourdain following the release of the biopic “Tony.”

In 2014, Bourdain traveled through Russia shortly before the Sochi Winter Olympic Games while filming CNN’s “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.” During the trip, he boarded the Grand Express, a luxury overnight train traveling between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The journey reflected something Bourdain often explored through his travels: transportation can reveal as much about a place as the destination itself. A sleeper train gives travelers hours to watch landscapes, cities and communities change around them rather than simply flying over everything in between.

The UAE Bets on a New Era of Passenger Rail

The growing interest in rail travel is not limited to historic sleeper routes. The United Arab Emirates launched its first national passenger rail network earlier this summer, marking a major change for a country where cars have traditionally dominated transportation.

The new Etihad Rail passenger service crosses the desert and is eventually expected to connect 11 cities across the UAE. Its first passenger train made its inaugural journey on June 30, 2026.

Building the network also creates a practical challenge: passengers still need an easy way to travel between stations and their final destinations. That issue becomes particularly important during the UAE’s summer months, when temperatures can climb above 120 degrees Fahrenheit, or 49 degrees Celsius.

Why Train Travel Still Captures the Imagination

Modern transportation is often built around reaching a destination as quickly as possible. Sleeper trains offer something different. Passengers can eat, rest, watch the scenery and sleep while continuing toward their destination.

Luxury trains can turn that experience into a vacation of its own, while more traditional overnight services can give travelers a practical alternative to flying or driving long distances.

The continued development of passenger rail networks also shows that trains are not simply a reminder of an earlier age of travel. New routes and rail systems are giving travelers additional ways to move between cities while keeping the experience of the journey alive.

The Journey Becomes Part of the Destination

Sleeper trains offer something increasingly rare in modern travel: time to experience the distance between two places. Whether crossing a continent, traveling between major cities or heading toward one of the world’s great landmarks, passengers can go to sleep with one view outside their window and wake up to another. As new rail networks join famous routes that have operated for generations, overnight train travel continues to prove that getting somewhere can be just as memorable as arriving.
