Southwest Airlines is preparing to enter the airport lounge business for the first time in its history. The airline has started construction on its first four Southwest Airlines lounges, which are expected to welcome travelers in late 2027. The move is part of a wider transformation at Southwest as the carrier introduces more premium travel options and changes several policies that once separated it from its biggest competitors.
Four Airports Will Launch the New Lounge Experience
The first Southwest Airlines lounges are planned for four major airports: Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and Nashville International Airport.
Construction has already started at the four locations, with the first guests expected in late 2027. Southwest is not stopping there. The airline says at least seven additional airport lounges are planned over the next several years, bringing its planned network to at least 11 locations. Future lounges are expected to target high-demand business and leisure markets.
Southwest Teams Up With Chase for a Premium Experience
Southwest Airlines is developing its lounge network with Chase, building on a partnership between the two companies that has lasted for decades.
The goal is to combine the hospitality associated with the Southwest brand with elements of the premium experience already found in the Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Network. The lounges are expected to feature sophisticated design, locally inspired dining, high-quality amenities and additional travel benefits.
Tony Roach, Southwest Airlines’ executive vice president and chief customer and brand officer, said the new spaces will allow travelers to experience the airline differently.
“Our lounges will be a natural extension of that experience, offering customers a place to relax and experience the Southwest brand in a new way,” Roach said.
The airline has described its partnership with Chase as an effort to “create a premium and welcoming airport experience.”
A New Credit Card Will Unlock Lounge Access
Getting into a Southwest lounge will be closely connected to the airline’s Rapid Rewards program. Southwest plans to launch a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card issued by Chase in 2027.
Holding the new credit card will provide access to the Southwest lounge network. However, the airline has not yet revealed all of the eligibility requirements or whether travelers will eventually have other ways to enter.
“More details on access and eligibility will be available closer to opening,” a Southwest spokesperson said.
The strategy also gives Southwest and Chase another way to strengthen their co-branded credit card business while offering frequent travelers additional benefits.
Southwest Moves Further Away From Its Low-Cost Roots
The introduction of airport lounges represents another major shift for an airline long known for keeping its travel experience relatively simple.
Southwest has already moved away from several policies that helped define its identity. The carrier ended its traditional open-seat boarding system in favor of assigned seating and changed its long-standing “bags fly free” policy. It has also introduced extra-legroom seating as it works to attract travelers willing to pay more for premium services.
The lounge network continues that transformation. Airport lounges have become an important tool for major airlines because they give passengers quieter spaces to work or relax, along with food, drinks and other amenities. They can also encourage travelers to remain loyal to an airline and sign up for premium credit cards.
A Bigger Bet on Premium Travelers
Southwest’s decision comes as competition for premium travelers continues to grow across the airline industry. Rather than relying entirely on the low-cost approach that shaped the company for decades, Southwest is expanding the number of products and experiences it can offer customers.
The first four lounges in Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville will provide the first major test of that strategy. With at least seven more locations already planned, Southwest appears to see airport lounges as a permanent part of its future rather than a limited experiment.
The lounges also give the airline another way to strengthen Rapid Rewards while making its overall airport experience more competitive with carriers that have operated premium lounges for years.
Southwest Begins a New Chapter in Air Travel
The arrival of Southwest Airlines lounges in 2027 will mark another important change for one of America’s best-known carriers. By combining new airport lounges, a premium Rapid Rewards Credit Card, its Chase partnership and an expanding range of premium travel benefits, Southwest is reshaping what passengers can expect from the brand. As additional lounge locations open in the years ahead, the airline will be testing whether its familiar approach to hospitality can translate into a more upscale airport experience.
