Travel Spotlights Small-Town Charm Across the u.s.
From soaring waterfalls in upstate New York to the birthplace of blues in Mississippi, CNN Travel’s 2025 list of America’s Best Towns to Visit highlights the diversity and character of the country’s most inviting small cities. This year’s selection celebrates destinations that blend cultural heritage, natural beauty, and strong community spirit — all while offering travelers unique experiences that go far beyond major metropolitan hubs.
Based on nominations from readers and contributors, CNN Travel evaluated towns on attractions, culinary scenes, local identity, nightlife, accessibility, and proximity to other interesting places. The final list spans towns with populations ranging from 15,000 to 115,000, each offering something distinct for visitors in search of inspiration, relaxation, or exploration.
Small Towns With Big Personalities
The list begins in Ithaca, New York, ranked No. 1 for its natural beauty and outdoor attractions. Nestled in the Finger Lakes region, Ithaca is surrounded by dramatic waterfalls, fertile farmland, and scenic trails. Buttermilk Falls State Park and a bustling farmers market reflect the town’s strong connection to nature and agriculture, while its college-town energy fuels a dynamic cultural calendar.
At No. 2 is Missoula, Montana, a haven for fly fishing, hiking, and the arts. Situated at the meeting point of four rivers, Missoula has evolved into a hub for outdoor recreation and creativity, with Indigenous art galleries and live music venues defining the local scene.
Asheville, North Carolina comes in third, rebounding from the impact of Hurricane Helene. Known for the historic Biltmore Estate and its location in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville’s strong community ties, scenic views, and artisanal food culture continue to draw visitors year-round.
A Coast-To-Coast Showcase of Culture and Nature
The list captures a wide range of landscapes and lifestyles. At No. 4 is Bend, Oregon, a Cascade Mountains retreat known for kayaking, biking, and its vibrant brewery scene. Annapolis, Maryland (No. 5) stands out for its colonial charm, sailing culture, and historic architecture along the Chesapeake Bay.
In Petaluma, California, ranked sixth, the town’s farm-to-table food, preserved Gold Rush-era buildings, and riverside setting make it a culinary destination in the heart of wine country. Meanwhile, Las Cruces, New Mexico (No. 7) boasts jaw-dropping desert views, access to hiking in the Organ Mountains, and a rich blend of Mexican, Native American, and Western culture.
Northampton, Massachusetts, placed eighth, offers a mix of progressive values, small-town charm, and a thriving arts scene. Anchored by Smith College, it’s long been a destination for LGBTQ+ visitors and food lovers alike.
At No. 9, Clarksdale, Mississippi, celebrates its deep musical roots. Known as the birthplace of blues, it hosts more than a dozen annual festivals and nightly live shows at iconic venues like the Ground Zero Blues Club.
Rounding out the list is Rapid City, South Dakota at No. 10. This “City of Presidents” offers proximity to Mount Rushmore and other national parks, while honoring Native American heritage through public art and community events.
